Half an hour on the train from Nice, and we were in a whole other country. One that’s about 3 km long. I don’t understand how or why Monaco exists; it’s basically built on a cliff on the side of the Mediterranean. Yesterday we were commenting how built-up Nice is, and wondering if when Europeans come to New Zealand, do they think we live in the jungle since the whole place hasn’t been urbanised and re-urbanised, the bush is just on our back doorstep. Is that why we look at the towns here and think we would struggle to live here, because we like to think of ourselves as having a pioneering spirit, but everywhere you go here there have been hundreds of years’ worth of people living there before you?
Anyway I digress. In Monaco we walked up hill and down... steps. We saw the stages being set up for the grand prix (to be held in May). We fought the crowds at the Musee Oceanographique, made famous by Jacques Cousteau. We ate what has probably been the best meal on the trip so far! (prosciutto pizza)
Time for some photos:
Admiring the view over Port Hercule and Monte Carlo
View over Port de Fontvieille
Above: juvenile sharks. Below: clown fish (not in the same tank!)
Now let’s play a game of spot the fish.
This puts a Peel P50 to shame. Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of it to show you...
