24 April: Nice, day 1

You know how Wellington has a reputation for being windy that’s a bit of an exaggeration apart from a few days a year? Well so far in Nice it’s been much windier than a ‘normal’ windy day in Wellington is. But you never hear about Nice being windy; no, in Nice the weather is always nice.

Anyway enough about the weather.

Today was a bit touristy, taking the hop-on-hop-off bus around the city, and the tourist train (which is just a buggy thing that drives along the road up to the castle hill). However, instead of riding the train back down the hill we opted to walk, and it turned out to be really nice. We had views of the port from above.

I think photos like this make good jigsaw puzzle pictures, but Mum isn't so sure!


And here's something else that's struck us: you know how people talk about the south of France and the Riviera as being good for your health? We've noticed that there seems to be a disproportionately high number of pharmacies around the place. Surely people aren't that sick, so how do they all stay in business?

The plan for tomorrow is to visit the Musee de Marc Chagall, which has a series of paintings illustrating the Old Testament. Then the Russian cathedral, supposedly the largest outside of Russia. After that we'll take the train to Monaco and visit the Musee Oceanographique. (All these things, along with the hop-on-hop-off bus and the tourist train, are included in a 2-day Riviera pass that we picked up today.)
