Phortse Tenga 3641 m
Dole: 4067 m
Distance: 5.8 km (42.1 km total)
Since today was going to be reasonably short (3 hrs or so), the night before, we had asked Rishi if it would be possible to visit Phortse, a village about 200 m climb up the hill from our camp. We had seen it from the trail most of the way yesterday and thought it would be a shame to miss out on potential views from there. So he made arrangements for Luk to take us up before breakfast. We left at 6:30 am and encountered a couple of yak convoys coming down. From the village we had great views up the valley to Cho-oyu, Tabuche, Machhermo peak etc. We were back by 7:40, in plenty of time for breakfast at 8:00.
After breakfast we hit the trail and after crossing the bridge took what we decided was a ‘Nepalese short cut’, i.e. straight up the hill, to reach the main trail. We made a conscious decision today not to let ourselves be rushed by anyone else, and were able to enjoy the scenery a lot more. There were a few more named peaks to add to the list: as well as Cho-oyu we could see Malangpulang and Kyajuri. We arrived at camp just after 12 and had lunch shortly afterwards.
At 2 pm Rishi organised a walk up the hill behind the camp to a big rock adorned with prayer flags – a climb of about 130 m. The wind was really cold, but I didn’t want to go too fast because my headache was threatening to come back with a vengeance. As usual it disappeared upon descent.
